Short List: What's Hot This Weekend

| TELEVISION Damages FX's sleek legal thriller is back, with sharky litigator Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) taking the case of a whistle-blower (William Hurt). Protégé Ellen (Rose Byrne), meanwhile, is building a case against Patty, who she believes tried to have her killed. And you thought your boss was rough.

| MOVIE The Class Originally called Between the Walls, Laurent Cantet's docudrama never leaves the Paris school where a teacher (François Bégaudeau) copes with and learns from his polyracial students. Affecting but not bathetic, this artful study goes to the head of the foreign-film class.

| ALBUM Dark End of the Street Cat Power solidified her status as the top interpreter of other people's songs on 2008's Jukebox. Consider this EP dessert: six new tracks from the same session, including a reworking of Aretha Franklin's "It Ain't Fair" that proves there's more than one Lady Soul.

| BOOK Disquiet In Julia Leigh's novella, a family reunites under grievous circumstances: a woman taking refuge from her abusive husband as her brother and sister-in-law mourn their stillborn child. At times macabre, always disquieting, it's a small-scale masterpiece of mood.

| SONG The Wrestler When Bruce Springsteen whips something up for a sound track--"Streets of Philadelphia," "Dead Man Walkin'" and now this credit closer for the Mickey Rourke movie--it tends to be memorable. That's because no songwriter is better at character or empathy.
