SINGING EDITION
GOOD WEEK/ BAD WEEK
Jim Carrey
Proved a decent vocalist, as evidenced by footage of a recent live karaoke session
Cyndi Lauper
Flubbed the national anthem during a 9/11 remembrance at the U.S. Open
MOVIES
Feeling the Need, the Need for 3-D
Between the dogfights and the beach-volleyball sequence, Top Gun was made for 3-D. More than 25 years after the film's release, one 3-D-conversion company recently screened an enhanced version of an aerial action scene at an Amsterdam film convention. Paramount hopes to re-release the film in early 2012.
FOOD
Schweddy Schweets
Sounds delicious! The latest flavor from playful ice cream impresarios Ben & Jerry takes its name from a 1998 Saturday Night Live sketch in which Alec Baldwin plays Pete Schweddy, baker of holiday snack balls. The flavor features vanilla ice cream, fudge-covered malt balls and unlimited giggles.
STYLE
Fashion's Odd Couple
More than 250 designers showcased their spring-summer 2012 collections during New York Fashion Week, which ran Sept. 8 to Sept. 15. While some came to see, like Vogue editor Anna Wintour, others went to be seen: rapper Nicki Minaj looked blinding in a neon-gumball top with equally bright tights and shoes. Good thing Anna brought sunglasses.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Lens on Latinos
The U.S.'s fastest-growing minority group is the focus of an exhibition of portraits by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders. "The Latino List" features some of the country's most notable Latinos, including (above, from left) actor John Leguizamo, writer Sandra Cisneros and rapper Armando Christian Pérez, a.k.a. Pitbull. At the Brooklyn Museum through Dec. 11, the show follows up on "The Black List Project," a similar venture from 2008.
FONTS
Pretty In Pink
Though the new movie Drive is a gritty crime tale, the font used in its poster and credit sequences make it look like a John Hughes coming-of-age story. "It's a very odd choice," says typography expert Simon Garfield, author of Just My Type. "It looks like it's written in lipstick." Not surprising, given that one of director Nicolas Winding Refn's favorite movies is Sixteen Candles.
NOSTALGIA
Future Kicks
These sneakers are four years ahead of their time. To raise money for Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's-research foundation, Nike is auctioning off 1,500 replica pairs of the Air Mags that Marty McFly wears while visiting the year 2015 in Back to the Future II. The first pair was reportedly sold to rapper Tinie Tempah for $37,500. Now where the hell are our hoverboards?
A WAVE OF AID
Works by 25 artists, including Chuck Close, Cindy Sherman and Raymond Pettibon--whose No Title (But the Sand ...), 2011, is above--will be auctioned off on Sept. 22 to benefit Artists for Haiti. Founded by actor Ben Stiller and art dealer David Zwirner, the nonprofit supports health and children's-education efforts in the nation, still in recovery from a 2010 earthquake.
