Twitter will try to generate additional advertising income by more aggressively integrating ads into the user experience. Like Facebook before it, it will experience some pushback.

Twitter: "Pushback"? Come on. Do people really expect to get all their Web services for free? Servers cost money.

POLITICS

Presidential candidates will once again establish token presences on social networks in an attempt to appear hip and with it. In fact, stiff, wooden postings of the leading contenders have the opposite effect, demonstrating the limitations of social networks as a tool in top-down politics.

Twitter: Honestly, what is so hard? The Egyptians figured it out in 2011. So did the Occupy Wall Streeters.

Facebook: Now you never have to be alone, ever!

Users: Can I be alone if I really want to? If I ask nicely?

Facebook: Why would you want to? Are you doing something embarrassing?

Users: I'm just saying, there are limits to how badly people want their friends and co-workers to know where they are at any given moment. People like their privacy.

Facebook: I don't know what you're talking about

Users: Facebook Places? Does that ring a bell? You introduced it last year, and nobody wanted it.

GLOBALIZATION

Facebook's membership, which hit 800 million in 2011, will reach 1 billion in 2012, with the biggest growth occurring in Asia and the developing world.

Google+: But we're fully integrated and feature-rich! We're an open platform! Size isn't everything, you know.

Facebook: Actually? It kind of is.
