The war in Iraq: it's a good ending to a bad reign but a bad beginning of a good reign.

Where to Find the WMD

I don't follow the circular reasoning in "The Next WMD Crisis" [WORLD, July 28]. U.S. military action against North Korea would be justified because the country intends to survive with the help of nukes? Let's face it: Iraq was invaded because it did not have a sufficiently advanced nuclear program. Would it be any surprise if Iran and North Korea, the other two targets in the "axis of evil," are developing nukes of their own? If the U.S. is intent on spreading its insecurity around the world, that is what the world will become: insecure.

Safety for All Ages

As soon as an elderly driver accidentally kills some pedestrians, there are immediate calls for road tests for drivers over 75 [HEALTH, July 28]. I have had only one ticket in 70 years of driving — and that was for speeding. Young people may speed or drive carelessly and kill a carful of friends, but I don't see any hue and cry to tighten licensing procedures for them. I am willing to test my driving skills against those of any young driver. Quit browbeating us seniors.

Joie de Vivre 101

Thank you for Michael Elliott's "Europeans Just Want to Have Fun" [ESSAY, July 28]. Learning from the Europeans is an excellent idea. As my child grows older, I see more benefits from spending time with family and fewer from toiling away so that we can afford a monster house and SUV. Seeing those different from us cast in a positive light is like a vacation in Paris.

Why shouldn't Europeans live life in the fun lane? Any time they have a disaster, a depression or another problem, the U.S. will rush to their aid with money taken from hardworking Americans.
