Alabama's Republican Governor, BOB RILEY, fought hard to make his state's tax system less regressive and provide more money for Alabama's low-performing schools through a $1.2 billion tax hike. Voters roared no in last Tuesday's election. But without any public signs of bitterness, Riley rebounded, proposing budget cuts while promising they wouldn't hurt the state's needy. Said he: "We have to make sure that we continue to protect the least among us."
