CANONIZED. JUAN DIEGO CUAUHTLATOATZIN, 16th century peasant from the Zapotec tribe, whose vision of the Virgin of Guadalupe helped drive the conversion of millions of Indians throughout the Americas; in Mexico City. On his fifth trip to Mexico, Pope John Paul II performed the canonization, the first for a member of an indigenous North American tribe.

ARRESTED. ALIMZHAN TOKHTAKHOUNOV, 53, Uzbekistan-born, high-profile Russian mobster who was suspected of rigging several beauty contests in Moscow during the early 1990s; for conspiring to fix skating matches in the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics; in Forte dei Marmi, Italy. Tokhtakhounov is accused of manipulating results in the ice dancing and pairs skating events so that gold medals would be awarded to the French and the Russian teams, respectively. If convicted he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

SENTENCED. FIKRET (BABO) ABDIC, 63, once considered to be the richest man in Bosnia; to 20 years in prison for war crimes that led to the deaths of 121 civilians and three prisoners of war; in Karlovac, Croatia. Following the collapse of communist Yugoslavia, Abdic distanced himself from the Bosnian government and declared himself ruler of a small autonomous region. To enlist the aid of Serb fighters to defend his fiefdom, Abdic turned his back on his fellow Muslims and set up camps where about 5,000 people were detained for just short of two years.

DIED. RACHID ABOU TOURAB, leader of the Armed Islamic Group (gia), which was formed after the Algerian military canceled 1992 legislative elections to prevent an Islamic fundamentalist party from winning; in Tamezguida Forest, Algiers. Upon being made leader of the antigovernment gia in 2001, Tourab was quoted as saying, "We will continue to destroy their harvests, take their goods, rape their women, decapitate them in the cities, the villages and the deserts." He died in a military sting operation.

DIED. GERHARD WESSEL, 88, former official in Hitler's anti-Soviet spy operation and head of the West German intelligence agency, the Bundesnachrichtendienst, between 1968 and 1978; in Pullach, Germany. Wessel was credited with founding Germany's military counter-espionage agency.
