DIED. ANNALENA TONELLI, 60, Italian aid worker who spent more than three decades helping sick Somalians; after being shot on the grounds of a 200-bed hospital that she founded; in Borama, Somalia. Tonelli was awarded the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees' top honor in April for her work combating tuberculosis, aids, malnutrition and female-genital mutilation. She lived simply, eating the same food as her patients. "I would never believe that my life is a sacrifice," she told the Washington Post in 1993. "It is an idea that makes me laugh ... I often felt that there was nobody on earth who had such a privilege to be able to live like this." Four suspects have been detained, but no motive has been found for her murder.

By RUSH LIMBAUGH, 52, conservative commentator; his addiction to prescription painkillers, for which he said he was checking into a rehab facility; on his nationally syndicated radio program. Limbaugh, who recently resigned from ESPN after making statements derided by some as racist, said his addiction began "some years ago" after spinal surgery. Two weeks ago, his name was linked to an investigation into an illegal drug ring in Florida. Limbaugh was said to be a possible buyer, but he has not been charged with any crime.

SIGNED. APPROVAL FOR DIRECT COMMERCIAL FLIGHTS BETWEEN VIETNAM AND THE U.S., for the first time since the end of the Vietnam War; in Hanoi. The agreement, which is still being finalized, will permit passenger and cargo flights. More than 1 million ethnic Vietnamese now live in the U.S., and Americans account for the second-highest number of visitors to Vietnam, after Chinese.

CHARGED. DALER MEHNDI, 36, superstar of Indian bhangra music, with fraud for allegedly planning to smuggle migrants abroad by disguising them as musicians and dancers in his troupe; in Patiala, India. Mehndi, a former cab driver who rose to the top of the Punjabi-pop genre, denied the charges and said his brother, who was also charged, misused his name.

ARRESTED. CAO QIANJIN, 27, Chinese water-purifier salesman, for allegedly poisoning a county reservoir with pesticides in order to boost sales of his products; in Ruyang county, Henan province, China. The state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that the poison made 64 people ill.

DIED. TIMOTHY TREADWELL, 46, self-taught bear expert and wildlife advocate, and AMIE HUGUENARD, 37, after being attacked by a brown bear; in Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska. Treadwell, a former drug addict, wrote Among Grizzlies about his experiences in the wild and appeared on TV shows such as the Late Show with David Letterman. The Anchorage Daily News reported some of Treadwell's last words to his girlfriend, Huguenard, which were caught on their video camera: "Get out here. I'm getting killed."
