SIGNED. APPROVAL FOR DIRECT COMMERCIAL FLIGHTS BETWEEN VIETNAM AND THE U.S., for the first time since the end of the Vietnam War; in Hanoi. The agreement, which is still being finalized, will permit passenger and cargo flights. More than 1 million ethnic Vietnamese now live in the U.S., and Americans account for the second-highest number of visitors to Vietnam, after Chinese.
CHARGED. DALER MEHNDI, 36, superstar of Indian bhangra music, with fraud for allegedly planning to smuggle migrants abroad by disguising them as musicians and dancers in his troupe; in Patiala, India. Mehndi, a former cab driver who rose to the top of the Punjabi-pop genre, denied the charges and said his brother, who was also charged, misused his name.
ARRESTED. CAO QIANJIN, 27, Chinese water-purifier salesman, for allegedly poisoning a county reservoir with pesticides in order to boost sales of his products; in Ruyang county, Henan province, China. The state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that the poison made 64 people ill.
DIED. TIMOTHY TREADWELL, 46, self-taught bear expert and wildlife advocate, and AMIE HUGUENARD, 37, after being attacked by a brown bear; in Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska. Treadwell, a former drug addict, wrote Among Grizzlies about his experiences in the wild and appeared on TV shows such as the Late Show with David Letterman. The Anchorage Daily News reported some of Treadwell's last words to his girlfriend, Huguenard, which were caught on their video camera: "Get out here. I'm getting killed."
