Curtain Raiser

Feeling fit? Then how about running around an Arctic landscape in the middle of the night? On June 19, the 15th Midnight Sun Marathon will kick off in Tromsø, Norway. The world's most northerly marathon, it doesn't begin until well into the evening, at 8:30 p.m. But given that the sun doesn't set in Tromsø between now and mid-July, the race actually takes place in plenty of light. These are unique conditions that attract amateurs and professionals alike from all over the world—last year, the field comprised 2,600 runners from 33 countries.

Outdoors: Comfy Camping

For those who value the convivial possibility of being back at the hotel bar before last orders, there are shorter races, including a half-marathon (about 21.5 km), a mini-marathon (a breeze at just 4.2 km) and a children's race. And while you're out on the trail, there's plenty to keep your less athletic travel companions happy, such as the Northern Lights Planetarium and the striking new Polaria center, dedicated to the Arctic life and environment. So slip on your running shoes and enter the race at www.msm.no.
