Gratifying as it was to see his dream become a reality, Conover immediately began looking to the future. The goal this year is to double the donations and to increase the base of donors. But he's also thinking nationwide. "According to our research, ours is the first group of its kind in the country," he says. "I'd love to see people 60 and older in every community approach their community foundation about starting a fund created from Social Security donations that can be recycled to the benefit of others."

Everyone wins. The donors get a tax deduction, and the recipients have money to further their community programs. "Social Security may be a hotly debated topic," says Conover, "but what we're doing with it transcends politics. Our goal is to take what is seen as an entitlement and use it for those who don't have as much."
