Whitehead, 61, moved up from executive vice president to president of fast-growing, widely diversified Garrett Corp., of Los Angeles, which does a $100 million-a-year business manufacturing aircraft and industrial equipment. Utah-born Whitehead, a World War I Navy pilot, ran his own flying service in Cleveland, then worked briefly for an aircraft-parts distributor before joining the infant Garrett organization's industrial-tools division in 1938.
