SHIPPING: A New Man

The nomination of Edward P. Farley to be Chairman of the Shipping Board (a post which he has held since last June by recess appointment from President Harding) did not find favor in the Senate. His nomination for the post was not confirmed before the Christmas recess.

Last week it was understood that

Mr. Farley had tendered his resignation to the President and that his nomination would be withdrawn.

The chief question that this event presented was that of a successor to the post. A dozen or more names were presented, but the President kept his counsel to himself in true Coolidge fashion. The choice of a successor to Mr. Farley and the presentation of a new shipping policy by the Administration were matters of momentary expectation.
