¶The indoor track season hit its stride, but Laszlo Tabori, the fast Hungarian refugee, lagged far off the pace. Trying the indoor mile for the first time at the Philadelphia Inquirer meet, he ran a slow 4:10.8, finished third behind Boston's George King (4:10.1) and Chicago's Phil Coleman (4:10.7). Next night in Washington, B.C., Tabori switched to the two-mile run, dropped out on the twelfth lap with stomach cramps. The winner: Polish Refugee John Macy (9:02.6), now a student at the University of Houston. Olympic Hurdles Champion Lee Calhoun came back from a Philadelphia defeat by Decathlon Champion Milt Campbell and beat Campbell in Washington with a world indoor record 8.2 sec. time for the 70-yd. high hurdles. Olympian Ira Murchison improved on a disputed victory over Duke's Dave Sime in the 50-yd. dash at Philadelphia by whipping Sime at 70, 80 and 100 yards in Washington in times of 7.1, 8.0 and 9.9 sec.

¶Skinny, sharp-elbowed Sandy Saddler, World's Featherweight Champion, abdicated his title after learning that he is suffering from "progressive blindness." In a twelve-year career, Sandy fought 160 fights, won 143, scored 102 knockouts. Three pretenders will fight for the right to take on Sandy's heir apparent: France's Cherif Hamia.

¶To commemorate her "vast contributions to the cause of fair play," Mildred ("Babe") Didrikson Zaharias received a posthumous award from the U.S. Golf Association: the Bobby Jones plaque for sportsmanship.
