When Dickens and Thackeray went shopping they were very apt to go to Shoolbred's department store on Tottenham Court Road, near Kensington Gardens. But since Shoolbred's was founded in 1817, London shopping districts have changed, and the famed ladies' wear and gentlemen's furnishings store has had hard times. Last week it was announced that Shoolbred's will be absorbed by its young (40 years) but great rival, Harrod's. Shoolbred's closing sent 1,000 employes to join the jobless.
