Animals: Irishry

The Manchester Guardian took cognizance of the British fishing season with an editorial which began:

''The number of salmon exported from the Irish Free State was (in the latest year for which figures are available) about 10 per cent greater than the number recorded as caught. This startling discrepancy is not just Irishry! it is poaching."

Continued the grave Guardian: A correspondent of the Irish Times has estimated that about 60,000 salmon are poached annually in the Free State. He seems to underestimate; for he reckons only fish that come upon the market, and omits those which the poacher eats himself."
