Medicine: New Hormones
Dr. Adolf Butenandt of Gottingen crystallized the female sex hormone theelin a few months after Dr. Edward Adelbert Doisy of St. Louis had done so, thereby losing the scientific glory of priority. Last week Dr. Butenandt announced ahead of anyone else that he had crystallized the analagous masculine hormone. The new crystal yet lacks a name.
Theelin affects the female procreative apparatus. Two Parisians, Drs. Andre Girard and Georges Sandulesco, last week announced crystallization of two more female sex hormones with specific actions. Because these hormones came from the urine of pregnant mares, they were named equiline and hippuline.
