CANADA: Nothing Personal
Never in his long reign has George V, King, Emperor and Defender of the Faith, been so insulted as was His Majesty last week by smiling Mitchell ("Mitch") Hepburn, bumptiously cheerful New Deal Premier of the Province of Ontario.
Mr. Hepburn has served strident warning that he cares not a fig for "the person of the King" as represented in Ontario by Vice-Regal Lieut. Governor Col. The Hon. Dr. Herbert A. Bruce (TIME, Jan. 28). Last week, to the scandal of the Empire, distinguished citizens of Ontario received this engraved notice from the Vice-Regal residence, Chorley Park:
Government House Tornoto His Honour the Lieutenant Governor regets that, the Prime Minister of Ontario and his Cabinet having declined the invitation to be present at the State Dinner on February 20th this function will not be held. His Honour trusts that you have not been inconvenienced.
Next step by "Mitch," the grinning Premier declared last week, will be to jam through Ontario's Legislature a New Deal depriving the King's representative of his official house and home. "There is nothing personal about this," said Premier Hepburn. "I don't wish my action to be construed as a discourtesy to Dr. Bruce."
