The Press: Times Change
The New York Times has five assistant managing editors. Next week it will have six. From his London post as chief of the Times's foreign service Virginia-born Correspondent Edwin L. ("Jimmie") James sailed for home to "go to school" in Publisher Ochs's executive department. Healthy and happy is English-born Managing Editor Frederick T. Birchall, 59, but the Times is farsighted, forehanded. Correspondent James had several weeks experience of his new job last summer. He will work with the night shift.
