GREAT BRITAIN: Bertie's Birthday

Actually born on December 14, and called Albert (Bertie to his family), the present King of England became George when he reached the throne (TIME, Dec. 21, 1936) and His Majesty's official birthday was changed to June 9. when the

London weather should be nice. Last week Bertie's real birthday was celebrated in Buckingham Palace. The King was 42 and to the party came 90 British children to romp with His Majesty's daughters. Princess Elizabeth & Princess Margaret Rose. There were tea & cakes in the Royal Picture Gallery and a performance by the Scottish Children's Theatre—which consists of six coy adults who recite Mother Goose rhymes in costume. No. 1 guest moppet was H. R. H. Prince Edward, two-year-old son of the Duke and Duchess of Kent and 5th in line of succession to the throne.

Birthday presents received by 42-year-old Bertie included: a smoking cabinet with pipes and Virginia cigarets from his daughters; four magnificent Arabian steeds from King Ibn Saud of Saudi-Arabia; a telegram from Adolf Hitler.
