After keeping a beautiful, well-mannered mistress at Lord Wharncliffe's villa for seven weeks ("Henry de Roos, who is the grand purveyor of women to all his friends, gave her to me"), 35-year-old Greville bitterly philosophizes that on account of her he has read no more than a dozen heavy volumes, doubts "if ever I shall take one to live with me again."
