The death in 1938 of Patrick Cardinal Hayes left the Roman Catholic Church in the U. S. with only three Cardinals. Many a U. S. Catholic hopes that Pope Pius XII will create one or two new U. S.

Cardinals this spring. Last week the Pope announced, not a new Cardinal but his first major promotion in the U. S. hierarchy.
