Education: Poor Julius
When plump, ruddy Julius Peter Heil, self-made industrialist, became Governor of Wisconsin last January, his backers had their fingers crossed. Each time unschooled Julius Heil opened his mouth, they held their breaths. Having no such misgivings himself, Governor Heil opened his mouth almost at once to denounce one of Wisconsin's prides, its State University.
He cut more than $1,000,000 from University of Wisconsin's budget, told University President Clarence A. Dykstra at a budget hearing: "Something is smoldering somewhere and I want to clean it up. I want to get rid of this cancerous growth or kill the patient."
Last week all Wisconsin chuckled as university students retaliated in their fashion. The Wisconsin Octopus, campus funnypaper, published Poor Julius' Almanack for i$3Q"Being Proverbs and Preachments, Suitable for Committing to Memory These Most Faithfully Set Down from the Publick Utterances of Your Friend and Ours, the Reticent Mr. Heil." Excerpts:
> And if you want to be courteous to me, won't you, when you go to bed at night, just say a prayer for me, as I go forth as a good Christian soldier to heal our wounds?
> I think our white father in Washington needs divine guidance. Won't you pray that our father in Washington will have his mind changed?
> (Explaining to businessmen that he had meant no offense in criticizing the university for spending money to teach Gaelic) I'm for the Irish, God bless them. They should have all the education they need.
> You know, I'd like to see the king and queen of one of the world's greatest democracies . . . and I might be able to get a word in edgewise about Wisconsin cheese.
