POLITICAL NOTES: Seeds of 1940
Friends of John Nance Garner quoted him as predicting, and favoring, cuts in Federal income-tax exemption from $2,500 to $1,200 for married persons, from $1,000 to $500 for single persons, to intensify tax-consciousness, curb spending.
> Pure-hearted Frank Murphy announced: "I personally don't want to be on a ticket of any kind." Opined Columnist Raymond Clapper, who has excellent Administration sources: ". . . The Attorney General is running too hard for the Vice Presidency . . . [There is a] hint in certain quarters . . . that [he] forget the ballyhoo and buckle down to work."
> Indiana's Paul Vories McNutt landed in California from the Philippines. His friend Senator Minton announced: "The entire McNutt campaign is predicated on the assumption the President will not run."
> New Jersey's Senator Smathers, Pennsylvania's Senator Guffey, Delaware's Senator Hughes announced they are Third-Termites. Indiana's Senator Van Nuys announced he is not one.
> Franklin Roosevelt revived his "dunce cap" for a correspondent who flatly asked him if he would run again.
> Columnist Heywood ("It Seems to Me") Broun, variously described as a great idealist and a one-man slum, said he would run for Congress on the Democratic ticket in Fairfield County, Conn.
> Midwest Young Republicans, convening at Grand Forks, N. Dak., called for Governor Harold E. Stassen, 31, of Minnesota as Keynoter of the 1940 Republican National Convention.
