Music: Mussolinic Order
(2 of 2)
"Mussolini" Petrillo is also one of five directors of Chicago's Park Board. Last summer he helped persuade it to put up $100,000 for the Grant Park open air concerts. Short, big-stomached, profane, President Petrillo likes good beer, good fights, good baseball. He has two sons, a Lincoln, a chauffeur to drive him to work. His statement to the press looked ghostwritten. Excerpts: "No sane, logical reason can be advanced to explain why musicians should thus continue to assist in destroying themselves. . . . The average recording unit receives in the neighborhood of $1,500 for a recording. ... By the time the record has worn itself out and been discarded, it has probably ruined and wiped out $1,500,000 worth of business for living musicians."
