Foreign News: No Prize, No Play

In Oslo last week the Nobel Peace Prize Committee of the Norwegian Parliament announced that it will make no 1939 award, recalled that during World War I the award was given only once, in 1917 to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

In Brussels, five days later, the 1940 Olympic Games were considered as good as canceled when Count Henri de Baillet-Latour, president of the International Olympic Committee, announced that if the Games cannot be held in Finland, as scheduled, they will not be held at all. Originally the 1940 Olympics were to have been held in Japan, were switched to Finland because of the war in Eastern Asia (TIME, July 25, 1938).
