MARKETS: Hutchins Huff
In the world of education President Robert M. Hutchins of the University of Chicago is known as "the boy wonder." In the non-cloistered world, 40-year-old Dr. Hutchins has made no such reputation. Franklin Roosevelt once summoned him to Washington for a high New Deal post but nothing ever came of it. Last week his recent election as one of three "public representatives" on the board of the reformed New York Stock Exchange also came to nothing.
The board was discussing whether to write an official finis to the Richard Whitney case. Dr. Hutchins held that since no investigation had been made of certain Exchange members whose previous testimony indicated they knew about Richard Whitney's criminality, the Exchange should take further action. After due talk, the board, including the other two public representatives, voted 27-to-1 to drop the matter. Dr. Hutchins thereupon resigned in a huff, not visibly aiding the public.
