GREAT BRITAIN: Clock Ticks
Germans who dared listen to foreign broadcasts could hear the slow ticking of a clock from the London studios of the BBC. After every seven ticks an announcer said in German: "Every seven seconds a German dies in Russia. Is it your husband? Is it your son or your brother?" BBC officials described the seven-second death interval as a "conservative estimate" based on a figure of 3,000,000 German dead in Russia since June 22.*
* German losses have undoubtedly been heavy, but for once BBC's conservatism can be doubted. If the Germans had lost 3,000,000 dead, their total casualties would certainly have been over 6,000,000 and three-quarters of the Army would be kaput.
