AIR: Airports Unlimited
The Civil Aeronautics Administration was getting action on its plan to put an airport in every county that needs one.
Last March CAAdministrator Theodore P. Wright asked Congress to start the country toward that goal by providing federal funds (to be matched by state funds) to build more than 3,000 new airports. The Senate felt that only $375 million could be spared for the project.
Last week, after a three-day debate, the House raised the ante to $700 million, authorized a ten-year building program which would almost double the number of airports in the U.S., would put airfields in 88% of the counties in the nation.-
-There are now 3,255 airports in the country, spread over 53% of the nation's 3,076 counties.
