Foreign News: Once upon a Time
At Berchtesgaden one prewar afternoon, Austria's timid Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg sat under a tree, waiting to be browbeaten. "Nearby Field Marshal General Wilhelm Keitel peacefully sunned himself on the porch. Last week Keitel told what happened next. Hitler appeared in the doorway, screaming: "Keitel, come here!" Schuschnigg watched as Germany's tall, arrogant Chief of the Supreme High Command strode into the house.
Said Keitel: "What does my Führer wish?"
Said the Führer: "I just wanted to frighten Schuschnigg."
