Sport: Record Hangover

In the seventh and final game of the World Series, Hal Newhouser's left-handed pitching finally paid off: Detroit 9, Chicago 3. Now Manager Steve O'Neill of the Champion Tigers could turn his mind to duck-shooting. The Cubs' Charlie Grimm, saying, "Well, I ain't gonna hang myself," headed for his Robertsville, Mo. farm to chop wood and raise horses. Their managerial hangover from the World Series orgy would soon be over, but the 21 assorted records their clubs had set would last a while. Some of the records:

¶ Most strikeouts by one pitcher in a single series—22 by Detroit's Newhouser (in 21 innings).

¶ Fewest batters to reach first base in one full game—2 against Chicago's Passeau (third game).

¶ Most walks for an entire series—Detroit's 33.

¶ Most strikeouts—Chicago's 48.

¶ Largest total attendance—333,457 (and take— $1,592,454).

¶ Biggest player pool—$475,714 (worth $6,445 and $4,000 respectively to each winning and losing player).
