National Affairs: Man of the People

Although many a Congressman, laborite and editorial writer glowered balefully at him, Harry Truman's popularity with the U.S. public continued at a serene high.

In a recent survey, FORTUNE pollsters asked a cross-cut of the nation how it felt about the President's 1) handling of foreign policy, 2) approach to home problems, 3) relations with Congress. Results: 75.6% thought he was-doing a good-to-excellent job on foreign policy; 58.9% liked his homework; 64.7% felt he knew how to handle Congress.

Republicans reached by pollsters thought better of Harry Truman's Congressional record than did Democrats; thought almost as well of his foreign and domestic policies.
