The war was still going on in at least one spot in the Pacific.

On Guam, Jap stragglers, who had hidden out for 16 months, ambushed four U.S. marines who had gone out to investigate reports of gunfire in the jungle. Despite serious wounds, one of the four managed to get away, crawled to a native village.

Next day, patrols found the bodies of the other three, robbed of weapons and partially stripped of clothing, lying side by side in a gully.
