ARMED FORCES: In the Semi-Finals
Other primary results last week:
In Michigan, four-term Congressman Bartel J. Jonkman (pronounced Yonkman) was defeated in the week's biggest upset. A bitter-end G.O.P. isolationist who liked to refer to ERP as "Burp," Jonkman had always received most of the Dutch vote in the fifth district's "Little Netherlands." This year he did not bother to do much campaigning. His opponent, Gerald R. Ford Jr., 35, did. A Grand Rapids lawyer and onetime University of Michigan football star, Ford had hundreds of volunteers pushing doorbells for him, time & again dared Jonkman to debate his foreign-policy stand. Jonkman refused. Back-slapping "Jerry" Ford's margin: nearly 2 to 1.
In Colorado, U.S. Senator Ed C. Johnson, whose friends and foes alike call him "the big dumb Swede," flattened former Democratic State Chairman Eugene Cervi in the Democratic primary, carrying every county in the state. In November "Big Ed" will face a tougher threat to his 26-year-old record of always winning Colorado elections. His opponent will be Will Faust Nicholson, 48, who astonished professionals by defeating John C. Vivian, twice governor and one of the state's most formidable Republicans. A tall, gangling man of immense energy and no side, Nicholson had never before run for political office. Eight months ago he launched a one-man crusade which carried him through blizzards and bitter winter cold to every corner of the state. An investment banker, former Legion post commander, and vigorous internationalist, he will level his chief fire on Big Ed's conservatism and longstanding isolationist record.
