World War I drove Charles Austin Beard, dean of U. S. historians, from the faculty of Columbia University. He was then militantly anti-German and prowar, but in October 1917 he resigned from the University because it had fired Pacifists James McKeen Cattell and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana.
