Less than an hour later, breathless newscasters had the definitive word. They broke in with an A.P. flash: ALLIES OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED GERMANY SURRENDERED UNCONDITIONALLY. The statement that there had been an Allied announcement was untrue, but the surrender of Germany...
