THE CONGRESS: 8-to-1
After six weeks of acrimonious hearings (TIME, Feb. 10 et seq.), the Senate's Atomic Energy Committee voted this week, 8-to-1, for confirmation of David E. Lilienthal as chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Ohio's John Bricker was the sole dissenter.
While it was at it, the committee also approved W. W. Waymack, Lewis L. Strauss, Dr. Robert Bacher and Sumner T. Pike as commission members, and Carroll Wilson as general manager of AEC.
The nominations now went to the Senate, where debate on Lilienthal alone, it was estimated, would take ten days.
