Lewis to Interior Secretary "Cap" Krug: "The notice of Nov. 15, 1946, terminating the Krug-Lewis Agreement as of Nov. 20, 1946, is hereby unconditionally withdrawn." With those 20 words old John formally served notice that his miners would not strike on April 1. He also made the United Mine Workers eligible for the lowered contempt fine ($700,000 instead of $3,500,000) imposed by the Supreme Court. Calculated an admiring subordinate: "He saved our treasury money at the rate of $140,000 a word."
