The Justices of the U. S. Supreme Court would as soon appear on the bench in sunsuits as violate the tradition that only the old (35 years), respected Harris & Ewing picture studio can photograph the Court. Last week Harris & Ewing's official, 1940 picture of the U. S. Supreme Court was distributed, showing as usual the Olympians of the U. S. robed in black, steeped in the law, anchored to the verities.

In the picture also was testimony to the influence the Court can exert on its own physiognomies. Two and a half years on the bench had molded ripsnorting Hugo LaFayette Black (right, front) into a male personification of Law. Only misfit face in the lot was that of Frank Murphy (right, rear), who looked as ethereally wretched as always.
