IF YOU WANT TO ENLIST—Regulations on enlistments differ in the four branches of the U.S. armed forces. Here are the chief qualifications:

Army takes men from 18 to 36, accepts older men if they have served before. Married men must have affidavits showing that their dependents will be cared for. To reenlist, they must have their wives' consent.

Navy takes volunteers from 17 to 50, but they must have special skills if they are over 36.

Marines take men from 17 to 30 for first enlistments, accept men up to 35 if they are re-enlisting. Only single men can join the Marines.

Coast Guard accepts volunteers from 18 to 31 for first enlistments, men up to 40 who have served before. Married men must have their wives' consent.

All branches of the service require that men be physically and morally fit. They must have records (birth certificates, doctors' affidavits, etc.) to prove that they are (or intend to be) U.S. citizens and are within the age limits. Minors may enlist only with the consent of their parents or guardians.
