Canada at War: BRITISH COLUMBIA: Bring Over the King
In Vancouver, cocky William R. Smith made his first political speech. It sounded like it. At the organizational meeting of his New Democratic Party of Canada, he told his audience of 133:
¶I "Canada and the United States [should be] a single republic."
¶To slice taxes, "everybody should be brought into the country except the Japanese until there are 300,000,000 people in North America. ... All the people from the old country can come over on the first boat. Bring over the King and Queen, too, and we'll give them all jobs."
¶"Sixty-five per cent of the people of this country want to vote for me. I know because I asked them. . . . The other parties might as well give up."
