The Press: Four-in-Hands Across the Sea
Harvey Morley, editor of the weekly Herald of Angola, Ind. (pop. 3,000), thought he was being funny. Shortly before Christmas, he had suggested to readers of his column, "Just Something to Talk About," that if they were given any loud Christmas ties, they might send them to Europe as morale boosters.
By last week, some 10,000 nightmares had arrived in Angola from as far off as Hollywood (dapper Adolphe Menjou contributed a dozen classy numbers, some London-made). The reaction from abroad (100 letters, a telephone call from Rome, a plug from the British Broadcasting Corp.) was appreciative but wary. Said a British newsman: "It's fine as long as they don't send us those things with naked ladies on them." Editor Morley, a little awed by the whirlwind he had raised, prepared to mail off the ties.
