OKINAWA: Sic Transit Gloria

A typhoon (named Gloria by playful U.S. weathermen) hit Okinawa July 23. For eight hours it lashed the big island, registering a velocity of 135 m.p.h. before the wind gauge blew down. The toll: 38 dead, 252 injured, 42,502 buildings, including 75% of all Air Force installations, destroyed or "50% demolished." It was the worst Okinawa typhoon since Louise in October 1945.

Gloria then roared across the East China Sea to strike Shanghai where it left 29 dead, 200,000 homeless.
