AUSTRALIA: Austerity Wanted

Because the Australian Government thinks that underpopulation and a happy-go-lucky spirit are threats to the country's security, the Government last week:

> Banned all birth-control propaganda, the advertising of contraceptives and their distribution by mail.*

> Asked that Australia's swarming weekly race meetings be diminished by holding them alternately, rather than simultaneously, in neighboring State capitals.

* In 1913 Australia got 135,700 new babies. In 1938, with the population two million greater, she got only 120,400.
