PERIPATETICS: Nor Heat, nor Gloom of Night

¶ Packing, in Moscow, to attend an all-Slav Congress in Manhattan next month: Alexander Yevdokimovich Korneichuk and his wife, Colonel Wanda Wasilewska of the Red Army. He is one of Russia's leading dramatists (Front, Death of a Squadron, Truth) and a member of the Supreme Soviet; she is a former Polish (now Soviet) novelist (The Rainbow), head (during the war) of the Union of Polish Patriots in Russia.

¶ Arrived, in London: Admiral Marc Andrew Mitscher, commander of the U.S. Eighth (Atlantic) Fleet and Vice Admiral Forrest Percival Sherman, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, en route to the Mediterranean for a "normal [and timely] inspection of naval forces in Europe."

¶ Arrived, in Stockholm, from Germany: U.S. Attorney General Thomas Campbell Clark with wife & son, on a "cartel-smashing trip." Said Clark: "General McNarney suggested my having a look at the Swedish beauties and here I am." Said the pilots of his plane: "A regular guy. He put us on his expense account."

¶ Arrived in Stockholm, "purely on business," General James Doolittle, now vice president of Shell Oil Co., and General David Sarnoff, president of RCA. Said Doolittle to rocket-rattled Swedes: "I would like to see a rocket very much." Said Sarnoff: "Show me a rocket and I will tell you from where it comes and how big it is. If the Swedish Government wants to avail itself of my services, I will be glad to oblige."

¶ Sojourning (indefinitely) in Paris: Mrs. Claude Pepper, wife of Florida's plangent Senator. As representative of the People's Mandate Committee, Mrs. Pepper will haunt the coulisses of the Conference until she has interviewed all the leaders of the 21 delegations. First to be bagged: Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov, who told her that he will recommend postponement of the U.N. General Assembly (now scheduled to meet on Sept. 23 in New York City) "until the end of the year." Mrs. Pepper also asked the Foreign Minister what he considered the chief stumbling block to the Peace Conference. Said Molotov: there are no stumbling blocks.
