SEQUELS: End of the Line
¶Charles S. Smith, 48, a Los Angeles realtor who told police a hair-raising tale of being kidnaped, robbed and doused with syrup and feathers (TIME, March 5), admitted that he had done it all himself to cover up a poker loss of $1,600 in real estate deposits.
¶Joseph Holmes, 39, who escaped from Maryland's State Penitentiary after 20 months of tunneling under the walls (TIME, Feb. 26), was recaptured after staging a $5 stickup in downtown Baltimore. His conclusion: "You can't get anywhere these days without a Social Security card."
