The Vatican turned thumbs down on electronic religion. From the Sacred Congregation of Rites last week came instructions to the clergy forbidding the use of phonograph records or tape recordings in religious services, even where no other music is available. Such mechanical devices are permissible in church only for the purpose of instructing singers, never during a liturgical function, which requires the full bodily participation of the faithful.
