Medicine: Congress Disposes

In the tug of war between Senate and House over how much money to give the National Institutes of Health for the fiscal year just begun (TIME, July 21) the Senate last week got the long end of the rope. With 75% of the funds under both bills earmarked for medical research, the House wanted to up the appropriation to $219 million (from $211 million last year). The Senate wanted to make it $321 million. The conference-approved compromise: $294 million.
