Science: Satellite XII

The Mt. Wilson Observatory announced last week that it has discovered a twelfth satellite of Jupiter. Astronomer Seth B. Nicholson first spotted its faint image on a routine photograph of Jupiter made with the 100-inch telescope on Mt. Wilson. Photographs made during the next five nights also showed the satellite and proved that it has a definite orbit around the big planet. Satellite XII is probably only about 15 miles in diameter, but Dr. Nicholson is particularly delighted with his find. Since he had already discovered three new satellites of Jupiter, he is now tied with Galileo, whose primitive telescope picked up the first four satellites in 1610.
