Second-quarter earnings reports continued to be good:

¶In the booming chemical industry, Union Carbide and Carbon Corp. reported record sales in the first six months, and net income of $52,478,580, up from $46,440,458 last year. American Cyanamid Co.'s net income was up from $14,856,000 to $15,679,000; the six-month net of Mathieson Chemical Corp. was $8,828,633 v. $5,135,516 a year ago.

¶On a record volume of $411 million in sales, Radio Corp. of America earned $18,185,228 in the first six months of 1953, or 61% more than last year.

¶Aluminum Co. of America reported a net profit of $27,133,771 in the first half, up from $23,233,236 a year ago.

¶Railroads shared in the upturn. New York Central's six-month earnings were $16,694,394 v. $1,810,277 a year ago. The Pennsylvania Railroad more than tripled its net income, from $5,740,457 in the first half of 1952 to $19,100,362 this year. In the same period, the Santa Fe's net rose from $30,382,533 to $38,118,191, and the Baltimore & Ohio reported its earnings up from $10,768,038 to $13,649,997.

¶Profits of independent automakers were down in the second quarter, largely because of the Borg-Warner strike, which cut off transmissions. Nash-Kelvinator net dropped from $7,156,811 last year to $3,419,279, and Studebaker earnings skidded from $3,925,074 to $3,350,827.
