¶ In Manhattan, newly crowned British Open Golf Champion Ben Hogan got a hero's welcome: a ticker tape parade up Broadway. Golfer Hogan also received a message from Golfer Eisenhower: "We are proud of you, not only as a great competitor and a master of your craft, but also as an envoy extraordinary in the business of building friendship for America."

¶ In Washington, the Marine Corps announced that Captain Ted Williams, 35, will be discharged from active duty next week after his release from the Naval Medical Center at Bethesda, Md., where he is taking treatment for an ear infection. Aviator Williams, with 38 Korean combat missions behind him, will play "the last six weeks of the season in the Boston outfield," said happy Red Sox Manager Lou Boudreau.

¶ In Detroit, the Tigers announced the unconditional release of former Fireballer Hal Newhouser, 32, who fattened his record during wartime years (29 victories in 1944). Newhouser blames his shortened career on his lack of military service: "So many other guys were in service that what few pitchers we had were given too much to do. I was one of them."

¶ At Chicago's Arlington Park, the Hasty House Farms' colt Hasty Road won the $157,915 Futurity in stakes-record time, 1:10 for six furlongs. Hasty Road took $101,475 as his share of the purse in the richest race ever run for two-year-olds.

¶ At Gothenburg, Sweden, Kansas Miler Wes Santee ran the fastest 1,500 meters ever run by an American. Time: 3:44.2, just a shade off the world record of 3:43.

¶ In Indianapolis, rushing the football season a bit, Notre Dame Coach Frank Leahy, a notorious pessimist, glumly predicted: "I'll be amazed if we make a single first down in ten games."
