¶ With no big tournament golfing experience, willowy Jean Ashley, 21, of Chanute, Kans. entered the national women's amateur in Tulsa "because it's so close to home," startled the field by beating Defending Champion Barbara Mclntire and rising to the finals. But there her beginner's luck ran out against the seasoned JoAnne Gunderson, 21. whose power off the tee set up a 6-and-5 victory.
¶ Two weeks after the Cincinnati Reds' Second Baseman Billy Martin caved in the face of Cubs' Pitcher Jim Brewer in a rhubarb over beanballs, the Cubs and Brewer fought back with a $1,040,000 suit against the Reds and their terrible-tempered infielder, provoked Martin to crack: "I wonder if they want this in cash or by check."
¶ Australia turned the finals of the U.S. national doubles championship in Chestnut Hill, Mass, into an intramural match as Neale Fraser and Roy Emerson defeated Rod Laver and Bob Mark by the score of 9-7, 6-2, 6-4.
